The start-ups that can change the future are here today

Words by Circklo team in News

Circklo’s Business Configurator Academy opened its doors to the first cohort of digitally sustainable start-ups at the end of March 2021.

Cirklo received over 100 applications for the March cohort; yet, only ten start-ups demonstrated, during the application process, that they are not afraid to change the status quo of linear business models, to push the boundaries of what is possible and acceptable, and that they understand that science and technology are the foundation of progress and business success.

Circklo’s unique business proposition in the sustainable start-up space is that the founders choose their investors and not the other way round. Circklo’s Business Configurator Academy has 18 mentors, 5 business coaches, 3 angel investors, 2 venture capitalists and 2 hedge fund managers heavily involved with its programme.

Circklo’s Business Configurator Academy is solely dedicated to the mavericks, misfits, innovators, and ceiling breakers of the 21st century technology and science: it is a safe space for those start-ups and SMEs founders who know they have more than just potential, they have the mindset to succeed.

The ten start-ups accepted for March 2021 cohort have a vast geographic spread - United Arab Emirates, Spain, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Denmark, USA, Germany and Netherlands. These are:

1. ANQA

Greenflea is a sustainable e-commerce platform that plants trees, concentrates developers of sustainable products in one marketplace and allows users to participate in a re-use system.

Greenflea also enables circular economy practices by creating a platform where it is possible to buy and sell second-hand products from individuals, as well as certified green products from established businesses.

Greenflea creates a responsible community of consumers who buys ecological products and who gives away what they no longer use, fully aligned to an eco-sustainable and circularity-oriented supply chain.

Their mission is to strengthen the potential of indigenous women to create sustainable social change in their communities, through innovation, scalable transformation and the highest respect for their craft.

Imarit is a bridge between two worlds, connecting the design driven, environmentally conscious and socially progressive with the beauty and the strength of materials and techniques perfected through generations of Peruvian women.

4. LEASABL

The Leasabl smart platform has been developed to reduce single use plastics (SUPs) in several consumer industries by digitising the circular cconomy for reuse. In other words, it is a centralised platform to facilitate reuse schemes.

It creates closed loop system and makes the crucial link between the reusable packaging and the consumer who borrows it while eliminating the need for a deposit system.

Through this platform and its associated tools such as consumer apps and point of sale technology, suppliers and retailers can use a smart tag to track reusable packaging throughout the life cycle, and accurately manage their supply - completely eliminating the need for SUPs.

6. NAABHIK

Naabhik provides a framework and toolset that help leading fashion and retail brands create comprehensive, yet easy to understand, logical data models for core entities like Product, Price, Sustainability, Inventory and Consumer.

Naabhik is enabling companies to gain valuable insights into their data, as they shift from Enterprise Resource Planning to headless application infrastructure.

These core sets centrally defined are system agnostic, but interconnected ‘living and breathing’ artefacts that can span multiple applications and business processes, and are necessary to allow for the growing flexibility needed for competitive differentiation in today’s consumer and data-centric world.

These data models can be used for data governance and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, and can act as the foundation to build a modular and scalable architecture.

7. NOZAMA

Nozama’s mission is to ensure all CO2 and Single-Use Packaging (SUP) are accounted for, compensated and recovered.

CO2 and SUP are currently not being measured along the supply chain up to the recyclers, nor are they being accounted for. This leads to the end-consumer’s carbon footprint not being measured.

It is therefore that Nozama offers a comprehensive and fully integrated stack of cloud-based sustainability applications and sustainability platform services that monetise the CO2 saved and the SUP recycled.

8. THE FUTURE IS GOOD

The Future Is Good is on a mission to help individuals and organisations improve their environmental impacts.

Their online platform comprises the world’s most comprehensive set of resources for making living and shopping sustainably easy and accessible for all. This includes a marketplace full of essential products from companies that do good for the world, content that highlights pro tips for a sustainable lifestyle, articles from thought leaders in the sustainability movement, and a community section dedicated to connecting users with other users who want to make the future good.

While their customers learn about and take action on sustainable issues, they collect rewards through making purchases and engaging in topical debates. These rewards can be redeemed for gift cards or 1-ton carbon offsets.

Every product available for purchase has been objectively scored based on environmental and community impacts, labour and animal rights, as well as product composition.

The Future is Good is developing the world’s first tool that can help individuals track their environmental footprint and that recommends actions for reducing it, empowering them and their communities to go carbon neutral in 30 days or less.

9. THE HIVE

TheHive is a business-to-business (B2B) staff sharing platform. It matches companies on the basis of supply and demand for human resources talent on flexible terms, allowing companies to enter partnerships that resolve their respective resourcing challenges.

Through their portal, a business client that is stretched for resources can ‘borrow’ under-utilised staff capacity from another non-competing company, on flexible terms. This can be on part-time/fractional capacity, full-time or temporary basis, to help them cleverly manage the peaks and troughs of workflow.

Talent sharing offers parent companies a safety net, allowing them to avoid unwanted redundancies or incur costly, extended drops in workload. On the other hand, hiring parties enjoy access to highly sought-after staff made available on affordable and flexible terms.

This setup allows both parties to improve efficiency and productivity, and to retain reliable and loyal employees.

TheHIVE operates on a no-win no-fee commission-based model. Joining the portal and exploring options is free. Hiring parties do not have to pay a single penny above the offered talent rates, and parent companies offering their staff only pay their share when they generate revenue.

10. YOUSEA

Yousea has developed a range of sustainable cleaning products which are sold as water-soluble tablets, called Eco-Xtabs. These are stored in reusable aluminium containers and, by implementing a refill system, YouSea’s products eliminate the need for unnecessary single use plastics and reduce CO2 emissions.

Instead of constantly buying new plastic containers for the same cleaning product, YouSea offers their tablets with a reusable container so that customers, once set up, only need to mix in water to use the product.

Their products are also developed with eco-friendly materials, free of chemicals, in an animal friendly manner. YouSea sells cleaning products for the truly ethical consumers who share the company’s Zero Waste values.
